Jun Kawabata
Jun Kawabata is a Tokyo-born photographer, composer, and documentary filmmaker. In 1986 he apprenticed with the legendary Dutch photographer Ed van der Elsken, and has since published four photo books—Absolute Elsewhere, No Matter Where You Go, SO FAR, and Tokyo Alien.
As a producer-composer, Kawabata produced the films and wrote their scores for Takeo Kimura’s features Nocturne of the Horse-headed Fiddle (starring Seijun Suzuki & Sayoko Yamaguchi), Old Salmon (starring Natsuyo Midorikawa), and Golden Flower (starring Yoshio Harada & Keiko Matsuzaka). He also composed the music only for five other titles: Hisayasu Sato’s Love & Loathing & Lulu & Ayano; Kimura’s Dreaming Awake (with Hiroyuki Nagato, Ineko Arima & Rie Miyazawa); and three documentaries by Yukihisa Fujimoto—One Shot One Kill, God Bless America, and Beneath the Bamboo Grave Posts.
Kawabata’s own documentary work includes Beauty of Tradition: A Journey into the Music of Myanmar (premiered July 2014 at Pole Pole Higashinakano, Tokyo) and Mandalay Star (released 2018, same venue).
